  • A new town square for Swindon

Threefold Architects collaborated with LDA Design to develop and deliver the regeneration and revival of a run down square in central Swindon. The existing space was transformed using a palette of simple natural materials employing a range of neutral colours and textures to create a modern, uncluttered and flexible public space.

Threefold Architects delivered the architectural element of the project, a four-storey steel and timber screen masking the existing car park, which had previously presented a forbidding facade to the square. The screen is made up of an array of large louvered panels of untreated Douglas fir, fixed to a freestanding structural steel framework. The screen provides a warm textured backdrop to the square, softened by a grove of silver birch trees and other planting throughout the space.

The project received a commendation in the Civic Trust Awards 2009.
